Understanding a House as a System (Preview Only)

As home construction technologies have changed in the last century, new problems and concerns have arisen: moisture issues, air quality problems, durability concerns and building comfort issues. This lesson looks back at the way houses were built in the mid-20th century and begins to look at how homes have changed since that time.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Describe early concerns about moisture and condensation that arose after World War II
  • Differentiate the characteristics of a modern American home from one in the 1950's
  • Explain the problematic consequences of increasing home insulation levels that took place starting in the 1970's
